Orrie Rolfe earned 7 varsity letters at Stivers with 3 letters in football and 4 letters in track. He was an excellent football player as a guard in his sophomore and halfback in his junior and senior years. Orrie was selected “Player of the Week” 3 times during his Stivers career, with the most significant in a losing cause to Chaminade in 1956. Orrie scored 3 touchdowns, a 77 yard run and two pass receptions, 63 yards and 49 yards from Gary Tanner. He was remarkable on defense as well, batting down 3 potential touchdown passes. Orrie had another outstanding game against Dunbar scoring Stivers TD in a 6-6 tie and gaining 69 yards for a 7.7 yard average. Orrie was second in scoring in the City League as a senior and for his efforts was named All-City halfback on both the Dayton Daily News and the Journal Herald. He was “Honorable Mention” as a sophomore on the 1954 City Championship team.
Orrie earned his first letter in track as a freshman which is a rare feat that few athletes accomplish. As a four year letterman, Orrie competed in the 880 yard run and the mile relay race.
Orrie was offered football scholarships to Miami of Ohio and the University of Chattanooga in Tennessee but elected not to accept them. He played football for the Dayton Triangles in the late 1950’s for two years. In addition, he played softball in the Dayton Industrial leagues for 15 years. Orrie was in the printing business for 34 years with 24 years at Dayton Press and 10 years at United Color. He also worked at Centerville Schools for 10 years before retirement.
Ora and his wife Sue have been married for 51 years. They have 2 sons; Tim (deceased) and Nick. They also have 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. They continue to live in the Dayton area. Orrie plays golf on the local courses in his retirement.
