Denny Madden – Class of 1911

Denny Madden

Denny Madden was the captain of the 1910-1911Stivers High School basketball team. He was a prolific scorer. After an unbelievable 49 point game against Middletown High School, the newspaperstated that Madden’s shooting was “the prettiest exhibition this country had seen in a while”. In a time when teams would only score 20-30 points a game, Denny amazingly scored in the 30’s and 40’son several occasions.

The 1910-1911 school year was a very good one for Stivers athletics as they won city championships over Steele in football, basketball and baseball. 1910 was the first year the Tigers had ever beaten Steele in football andthat started a rivalry that would lasts into the 1930’s, when Steele was closed.

We can not find that Denny Madden played football for the Tigers but heplayed a huge roll in Stivers winning the basketball and baseball city championships.

As we said earlier he was a prolific scorer in basketball. He lead the team in winning two of the three games against Steele.

  • In a 69 to 2 win over Middletown, he scored 49.
  • In a 48 to 6 win over Xenia he scored 32.
  • In a 37 to 14 win over Lebanon he scored 20.
  • And in a 47 to 24 win over Springfield he scored 31.
  • Unfortunately, the team lost in the Delaware State Tourney to Chagrin Fall in 1911 by a score of 27 to 19.

After high school, Denny went to work for Delco and played basketball for their team. He worked his way up to the service manager position but died suddenly at the age of 55 on March 21, 1947 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery. Danny and his wife Louise had three sons and two daughters.
