Carl Herbert was one of the early sport stars at Stivers High School earning 5 varsity letters in football and track.
Football was his best sport being named to the All-City First Team in both1910 and 1911 at running back. He was the Tigers football captain in 1911. The football team went undefeated in 1910 and beat Steele for the first time, 12-0, winning the city championship for the first time in school history. In 1911 they won four and lost five but beat Steele 13-0 to win their second city championship.
Herbert ran for a key 10 yard touchdown in that game. In track Carl set a record time in the city with a time of 27.3 second in the 220 yard dash.
After graduating from Miami University in 1916, Carl played football for several local teams, but bowling became his favorite sport. He participated in52 consecutive American Bowling Congress (ABC) tourneys around the country.
In 1934 he threw 12 consecutive strikes for a perfect 300 game which enshrined him into the ABC Hall of Fame.
He served the Dayton Bowling Association for 49 years, 36 as secretary, 12 as treasurer and one as vice-president.
Carl was known around Dayton from 1944 until his death in 1976 as “Mister Bowling”.
Most of Carl’s working years were with the NCR Corporation. He retired from NCR in 1963. He died on April 30, 1976. His wife Hester proceeded him in death. They had one son, Phillip.
