1959 Professor and Chairman, Department of Botany. Held that position for 18 years. Grew that department from 5 to 14 faculty members. The department was recognized as one of the nations best taught until his retirement in 1981.
Presented with Miami’s Benjamin Harrison Award. Wrote numerous Journal articles and two textbooks. Served as Editor (1964-1969) American Journal of Botany Society. Treasurer, VP and President (1971-1972) American Botanical Board. 1974-1981 Chairman of Miami’s Athletic Advisory Board, Mid-American Conference representative to the NCAA, 1994 Miami University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Charles was married to Dorothy Johnson from 1938 to1973. They had three children. He was married to Eva Johnson from 1974 to 2000. He passed away 2003 at the age of 89. He is buried in Moscow, Idaho.
