Basketball coach Carlos Roberts put the Stivers basketball program back on the map after almost 30 years of either no program or no winning seasons. Carlos came from the Colonel White basketball program where he had won 5 straight City Championships and 4 Coach of The Year Awards.
He took on the challenge of coaching the Stivers program that had not had a winning season since 1975. It was a difficult challenge with Stivers being the smallest school in the Cincinnati-Dayton Public League. Stivers was a DIII program and had to play much bigger DI schools in their league.
Carlos was up for the challenge going 11-10 in his first season. He followed that up with seasons of 14-8,11-10,15-7 and 13-11 for a combined 64-46 record in his 5 years of coaching at Stivers. During those 5 years Stivers played in 4 DIII Sectional finals games winning 3 District finals and played in 3 DIII District final games. They lost one of the district final games to the number one seed Middletown Fenwick in triple overtime. Carlos also coached Stivers Athletic Hall of Famers Terrence Morgan, Quincy Heflin and Nate Davis as well as two of this year nominees William Tracy McGuire and Ian Harrell.
Carlos was also an outstanding athlete and an Athletic Hall of Famer at Wilbur Wright High School. He was the only player to be named First Team on both the basketball and football All-City and All Greater Dayton Teams his senior year.
Carlos has retired from the Dayton City Schools after 26 years of teaching. He currently lives in Wilmington, Ohio with his wife Cheryl. They have one daughter, Brianna.
