George played golf at Stivers in 1948, 1949 & 1950. As a senior he finished second by one stroke in the Tri-State Tournament to Gay Brewer who later won the Masters. At Ohio State he was a three year starter and was the low scorer for OSU all three years in the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments. In his junior and senior years he was undefeated and the 1954 squad won the Big Ten by 22 strokes. Smith graduated from OSU in 1954 and was a medalist in the 1954 Ohio Amateur 2nd low amateur in the 1954 Ohio Open and later won the Eaton Open against pros. In those years theTournament was a popular event and drew players from OH, IN and KY. George won the Fort Sill Open against pros by several shots in 1955 before his career came to an abrupt halt 3 weeks later when he contracted polio. He is a co-owner of Woodburn Farm where he is recognized as one of the all time leading breeders of thoroughbred horses in the history of Ohio racing. George and his wife, Nodie, had 4 children and live in Kettering.
