George was one of the top ranked high school tennis players in Ohio during the early 1950’s. He was Number 1 on the Stivers varsity during his four year career. George’s only loss was to Oakwood’s Barry MacKay who later became a world class touring professional. In junior play, George represented the Ohio Valley five years at the National Junior tournament. He was equally outstanding in his academics, graduating 6th in his 1953 class of 200 students, earning membership in the Stivers National Honor Society. George received a tennis scholarship to Indiana University where he was a four year varsity player. He won the Big Ten Singles title in 1955 and the Doubles title in 1956.
Following graduation, George competed and earned several titles in both Ohio and Texas. These included the 1960 Ohio Valley Singles and the 1970 and 1972 Texas Junior Vets championships. He also partnered with fellow Stivers graduate Bill O’Neill to win several Ohio Doubles championships.
George, a widower, lives in the Dallas area, and works marketing software to school districts. He also gives back to the game he loves by teaching and coaching tennis to adult and young players in the Irving, Texas area.
