Bill Mumma earned 12 letters in football, basketball, baseball and track at Stivers. He played forward on the 1915-16 and 1917-18 basketball teams which won state champion-ships. He captained the 1916-17 and 1917-18 teams. In track, he was the Ohio State Champion in the 880 and Mile in 1918. After graduation, he was coach Bill Marquardts’ assistant coach and helped lead the Tigers to another state basketball champion-ship in 1919.
Mumma moved to Illinois in 1919, completed the University of Illinois coaching course and enrolled at Y.M.C.A. College in Chicago. He ran track, played basketball and was a member of the 1921 football team which went undefeated. Bill graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1923.
He took a job at Riverside Jr. College in Riverside. California, coaching football, basketball, baseball and track. In 1925-26, his teams set a record by winning Southern California championships in all four major sports in one year.
Bill moved on to coach the major sports at Riverside Poly High School. In 1959, he was inducted into the national Helms Foundation Hall of Fame for Coaches.
He and his wife, Dorothy, had three sons: William, Lawrence and Douglas; and seven grandchildren. His sons started the “Bill Mumma Scholarship Fund” for Riverside Poly High School graduates.
