As a freshman, Dale was a starting forward and a leading scorer on the freshman team that finished second in the City League. As a 6’4″ sophomore forward he was not a starting player on the Varsity. However, after the third game, he saw action in almost all remaining games. He ended the season as the sixth leading scorer on the City and District Championship teams. In his junior year he became a starting forward and the second leading scorer on the second place City and District teams. He scored in double figures in most games and had a high game of 27 points. As a result of his outstanding shooting and rebounding abilities he was selected 1st Team All-City at forward.
As a 6’5″ 185 lb. senior, Dale became the ideal high school and college forward. He was a threat to score from anywhere on the floor and was an excellent offensive/defensive rebounder and ball handler. He helped his team achieve a 19-2 season, a first place state ranking, a City Championship and a 2nd place finish in the District Tournament.
The individual honors Dale received were:
(1.) 1st Team and Captain All-City team
(2.) 1st Team and Co-Captain All-District team
(3.) Leading scorer of the Ohio All-Star team that defeated the Kentucky All-Star team
(4.) 1st Team All-State.
He thus became one of Stivers most acclaimed single sport (basketball) athletes.
Dale received many scholarship offers and accepted the University of Dayton offer. He played freshman basketball and completed his freshman academic year. Rather than start his next year of college, Dale decided to join the Marines. While in the Marines he got married and, when discharged, returned to Dayton to a working career in local industry
Sadly, Dale died in 1973 at the age of 38. He was survived by his mother (now deceased), his sister June, daughters Susan, Laura, Jennifer and son Kenneth (now deceased).
