Don Postway excelled in 2 sports at Stivers and was one of the Tigers best athletes of the 1970’s.
Football was his best sport and even though the 1974-75 team finished with a 2 win 8 loss record, he was highly honored for his defense.
Don was named to the All-Public League 1st Team and All-Greater Dayton 2nd Team at defensive end. He signed a national letter of intent to play for the Central State Marauders.
The 1974-75 Tiger basketball team had one of their best seasons ever and Don was an integral player. The team won the Class AA district and region, but lost in the state finals 77 to 72 to Warsaw River View in overtime. Most think the Tigers had the game won until a last minute turnover gave River View the opportunity to tie. It would have been a record ninth state basketball championship for Stivers.
At 6’3” and about 200 lbs., Don was not a big center, but he played like one. With obvious great quickness and leaping ability, he led the team in rebounding and blocked shots. In the regional finals against Springfield Shawnee, won by Stivers 63 to 44, Don accounted for 24 of 33 team rebounds when the opposition had a 6’7” and a 6’9”player battling him inside. Don was not one of the primary scoring leaders, (Frankie Sanders and Eric Sutton were), but still played an integral part in the success of the team. He was named to the Dayton All-Public League Honorable Mention Team.
Don was a 30 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He retired to the Atlanta, Georgia area with his wife Ollie, a son and daughter. Sadly he died about 2014 in the Atlanta area.
