Elmer was one of the many great players that came out of Stivers High School in the 1920’s decade. He played basketball, football and baseball for the Tigers. Basketball was his best sport and he could play all three positions.
The 1925-26 team went 16-6, they beat Steele for the City Championship, but lost to Cincinnati Hughes in the District Finals. “Red” was elected Captain of the 1926-27 team by the players.
They were 18-2 that year and won the City Championship. Elmer was then named to the All-City First Team at the center position.
It was a good thing that Jones decided to go out for the football team his senior year. Stivers regular fullback, Charlie Zukor, was injured early in the season and “Red” adequately took that position.
The team went undefeated in 1926, beating Steele 6-0 to win the City Championship. “Red” was named to the All-City First Team. He also played on the baseball team.
After graduating from Stivers, Jones continued to play basketball and football in various leagues and referee games.
In December of 1927 he broke his foot playing basketball for Kelly Kubs.
He played at least two years of basketball with the Wm. A. Shroyer “Shroyers” in 1930 and 1931. In 1934 he was playing football with Dayton in the National Professional Football league. From 1937 until at least 1939 he played for the Frigidaire basketball team in the Factory League. He also refereed in the Bomberger Park league.
Elmer “Red” Jones retired from Frigidaire. He passed away at the age of 52 on December 20, 1970. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery.
