Herb Brown was an East Ender all the way! He attended Emerson Junior High before coming to Stivers. It is interesting to note that the entire state championship team of 1929 played together during their junior high and high school careers. Brown was selected 1st Team All-City in 1929 along with teammates Bill Hosket, Bob Colburn and Larry McAfee. Herb was the defensive stopper on the team and always guarded the other teams top scorer. That state championship team was thought by many to be the best ever to come out of Dayton.
Brown, along with teammates Hosket and Colburn headed to Ohio State University after graduating. Their 1933 team at Ohio State only lost one game and was champion of the Big Ten Conference.
Herb Brown became a successful high school coach at Salem High School in Ohio from 1934-1944. He also coached the semi-pro Dayton Metropolitans for a period of time. He became successful in real estate and was elected President of the Ohio Association of Realtors.
He and wife Janet had one daughter, Cindy Ellis, and two grand children, Becky and Greg Ellis. Herb passed away August 21, 1993 at Kettering Medical Center in Kettering, Ohio.
