Horace “Hawk” received 10 letters in 3 sports during his high school career. In basketball he was the leading scorer in 1923 and captain of the City & State Championship teams in 1924 and 1925. They won the title in 1924. Hawk was an end on the football team that won the City and National Championship in 1924 and 1925. He played 1st base on the City and State Championship base-ball team in 1923 & in 1925 he was voted “Dayton’s Best All-Around Athlete”. Hawk was a member of the first team from Dayton to play in the 1927 National Amateur Baseball Federation Tournament. He is enshrined in the Dayton Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. From 1934 to WWII Hawk coached football & basketball at Stivers. After the war, he returned to teach world history and coach freshman basketball & golf. He was named the Athletic Director at Stivers in 1955. Hawk died at age 78 and is survived by 1 daughter, Ellen, and 4 grandsons.
