Janet Nicely attended Westwood Elementary and Roosevelt High School, graduating in 1955. In high school she was named the “Best All Around Girl Athlete for 1955” and was called the “Babe Zaharius” of Roosevelt by Mr. Eidemiller. At Roosevelt she was very active in the Girls Athletic Association and due to the strong influence of Jean Booker decided to be come a physical education teacher.
After graduating from Bowling Green State University in 1959 with a B.S. in education, she was hired by the Dayton Board of Education to teach physical ed at Stivers. She also worked during the summer for Montgomery County at Townview Elementary, coaching girls softball and as a playground leader.
At Stivers, Janet not only taught physical ed but also coached girls volleyball and served as advisor to the cheering section and Y-Teens. During the 1963 summer break she worked for the YWCA teaching “Playtime Pigtails”.
Janet met Russell Nicely at Stivers, and they were married in 1960. They have been together ever since. When their son Stephen was born in 1966, she resigned from teaching at Stivers. For 10 years Mrs. Nicely served the Indian Lake School System as a substitute teacher and tutor.
Janet and Russell split their retirement years between Indian Lake and Florida. They continue to support the Stivers Alumni Association and the Stivers Athletic Hall of Fame.
