John Monhollen – 1974

John Monhollen was the best Stivers gymnast of the 70’s decade. He competed and lettered for the varsity all 4 years at Stivers under Coach Willie Lalks’ guidance.

By his junior year, John was among the top six competitors in the City of Dayton Gymnastics Championships. He placed in trampoline, parallel bars, horizontal bar, and pommel horse, and was third in “All Around” events.

His senior year, John was instrumental in the Tigers winning the City of Dayton High School Team Championship. He placed second on the trampoline, third on the rings, second on parallel bars, and third in vaulting. His performance earned John the coveted title of “Best All Around Gymnast” in the City of Dayton. In his senior year of 1974, in regional competition, John qualified for the State of Ohio competition on the rings, trampoline, parallel bars and ”All Around” events.

After graduating from Stivers, John attended Wright State U. and Sinclair Community College. He earned his Associate Degree in Applied Sciences for Physical Therapy from Sinclair.

Currently, John works as a physical therapist, rehabilitating a wide range of patients with orthopedic injuries, amputations, neurological impairments and general debilities to aid in their recovery and regain independent functional lives. On the side he has taught CPR and he helped start a high school gymnastics team in Indiana.

John and his wife, Kathy, live in Hamilton,Ohio. He has three children by a previous marriage and one step-child. He is a proud father, step-father, and grandfather.
