Judy Gore Greenwood – 1963

Judy Gore was an outstanding gymnast that was recruited and coached by Joe Sullivan. She was an integral performer for the “Flying Tigers” gymnastic team, earning 4 varsity letters. Judy teamed with Pat Gregor, Sandy Darby, Joyce Lee, and Della Olbers to form one of Coach Sullivan’s strongest womens team in the history of Stivers. At many of the meets, the above five were competing against one another for gold, silver, and bronze awards. Trampoline was Judy’s strongest event, but she was also competitive in the other “All-Around” events of tumbling, floor exercise, balance beam, vaulting, and uneven parallel bars.

In addition to team competition, Judy preformed for Gymkhana at Memorial Hall, UD basketball games, Dayton TV programs, parades and demonstrations in Columbus. One year, Judy and Ted Lewis were chosen to preform on a float in The Dayton Christmas Parade.

Former Montgomery County Sheriff, Bernard Keiter, a 2009 Stivers Hall of Fame inductee, was so proud of the “Flying Tigers” team that he hosted a dinner in their honor.

Judy was also quite active in other activities at Stivers. She was a four year cheer leader and a news agent for the school newspaper. She volunteered for the Red Cross and as a “Candy Striper” at St. Elizabeth Hospital. After graduation, Judy’s family moved back to Tennessee where she met and married her husband of 53 years, Tom Greenwood, a building contractor and an elder at their church. They have 3 sons, 3 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.

After working and attending classes at Tennessee Tech U., Judy worked 23 years for the Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation, retiring as a supervisor in Member Services.

Judy credits her Christian faith, family, and the amazing education and opportunities received at Stivers High School for her life’s success. She was asked why all records and references to her at Stivers spells her name Judi. Her response was that it was a phase that she went through at that time in her life and that Judy is the proper and legal spelling.
