Larry McAfee, was the “best of the best” when it came to being a “student athlete”. He was a “straight – A Student”, and voted best all around boy his junior year in 1928. As a senior he was voted class president!
At 5 ft, 9 inches, and 160 lbs., he was a “two year” starter, Larry played forward on two State championship basketball teams in 1928 & 29! He was outstanding as a passer; through his assists and team work, many of the team points were due directly to his efforts.
In 1929, with a 23-0 in regular season and a 29-1 overall – Stivers won the State Championship! Stivers won 3 State Championships in 1928, 29 & 30 – no other team has achieved this honor; also Stivers won eight State Championships out of 15, from 1916 through 1930. Larry and his teammates helped set those streaks in motion. According to Coach Stahl of the 1929 team, “…these boys played better together than any other team I have coached!”, That team is considered to be the best Stivers team ever.
Larry went to Wittenberg College, where he helped win the Conference Championship in 1933. He was a member of the ATO Fraternity, and – greatest of all – a member of the Ohio High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
In 1964, Larry McAfee shot a golf score of 76 & took the “low score” Championship at Meadowbrook Country Club in the Dayton Senior Golfers’ Invitational.
Larry retired as manager of Peninsular Steel Co. – and as “Past President” member of the Dayton Country Club. He was also “Past President” of the Dayton Agonis Club and a member of several local organizations: Riverview Lodge #717 F&AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton and Antioch Temple and the Dayton Tool & Die Association.
Larry had two sons – Greg, with his wife Beth, of Kettering, Ohio – and Chris, with his wife Sue, of Houston, Texas. Larry passed away Feb, 8, 1982 at the age of 81.
