Scott Kayser earned eleven varsity letters at Stivers, three in football, and four each in gymnastics and track. As a freshman he earned his numerals as a member at the cross country team. As a gymnast Scott finished with places in the city all-around competition each of his four years. On the track he started as a pole vaulter, but soon exceled in the long jump, high jump and high hurdles. He placed in the city wide competition in the hurdles and high jump as a senior. In football he was the starting quarterback in his junior and senior seasons and was a co-captain during his senior year.
While at Stivers he was an officer of the student council and president of the National Honor Society. As a senior he was named a Top Ten Senior in Miami Valley by the Dayton Daily News. He won the Rensselaer Mathematics and Science award, the Ohio Science Education Superior Academic award and attended the Presidential Classroom in Washington, DC. Scott graduated as the valedictorian of the class of 1970.
After graduation Scott reported to the United States Coast Guard Academy graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He earned eleven varsity letters there: three in football, four in indoor track and four in outdoor track. He was named to the All New England track team as a sophomore when he broke the Academy record in the long jump and again as a senior when he placed second in the high hurdles and was part of the championship 4×100 yard relay team. He was inducted into the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
As a Coast Guard Lieutenant, Scott attended graduate school where he earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He retired from the Coast Guard with the rank of Captain after a 30 year career.
Scott has been married to Cathy Tiller, Stivers 1972, for the past 41 years. Cathy is a business teacher at Hickory High School. They have three daughters, Lauren, Allison and Colleen, and three grandchildren. Scott and Cathy continue to live in Virginia.
