Jack was a two year starter at right tackle on offense and defense for the Stivers 1952 Dayton Public School Championship Team.
He was a unanimous selection on the Dayton Daily News All-City Team and a First Team selection on the Journal Herald All-City Team.
He was an efficient blocker on offense and excelled as a defensive lineman. This Stivers team averaged 31.6 points per game offensively and allowed only 8.3 points a game defensively. Jack was very important to the success on both sides of the football.
The 1952 Stivers football team lost the season’s opener to Springfield, the number one ranked team in Ohio.
They also lost to Chaminade in the City Championship game 20-13 for a record of 5 wins and 2 loses and 0-0 tie with Roosevelt.
Rust also played on the Stivers baseball team as a pitcher/first baseman. The 1952 team won the Dayton City Championship and Jack played an important role as a relief pitcher in critical games. He earned 3 varsity letters in football and 2 letters in baseball.
Jack grew up in the Belmont community and accepted a scholarship to the University of Dayton. He suffered a severe broken leg as a freshman which ended his football career.
Jack was employed at NCR and the Dayton Daily News while raising two daughters in Kettering. He died in 2003 at the age of 69, leaving two daughters and eight grandchildren.
