Jonathan Cox was an outstanding scholar athlete for Stivers School For The Arts. His main claim to fame was in track, but also swam for the 100yd. breaststroke and the 50 yd. freestyle events for the Tiger’s swim team.
The Long jump was his specialty. As a sophomore in 2000, he finished second in the City of Dayton meet with a jump of 20’ 3”. In 2001 he won the Jonathan M. Cox Class of 2002 city meet with a distance of 20’4”, was Division 111 District champ with a leap of 21’8”, and 3rd in the Regional meet at 19’10”. He finished 8th in the State of Ohio meet with a jump of 21’8”. Also in 2001, Jonathan won the Eaton Invitational Long Jump event with a leap of 21’3” and set a school record at the Edwin C. Moses Relays with a Triple Jump of 43’5”. In 2001, Jonathan was named “Athlete of The Week” by the Dayton Daily News.
Jonathan had another outstanding track season in 2002, his Senior year. He was 2nd in the city meet with a Long Jump of 20’4” and won the High Jump event with a leap of 5’10”. He was 3rd in an Area meet with a Long Jump of 21’9.25” and then won the Division 111 Regional meet with a leap of 20’10”. In addition to his success in the Long and High Jump events, he was a member of the 400 and 1600 meter relay teams.
Jonathan was also a scholar athlete. He graduated with a 4.3 GPA and was MVP of the track team. After graduating from Stivers, Cox attended Hampton University and went on to earn two Masters Degrees and a PhD. He has worked in academia for most of career as a teacher, college administrator, and professor. He is now serving as Vice President of Policy and Research for the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, DC.
Jonathan and his beautiful wife, Charissa, have a two year old daughter, Amaya.
