Della was one of the many fine gymnasts coached by Joe Sullivan. He came to Emerson Elementary and recruited her in the 7th grade. She was a four year varsity letter recipient that represented the gymnastic team in the “All Around” events of Vaulting, Floor-X, Balance Beam, Trampoline, and Uneven Parallel Bars. Her best event was the Uneven Parallel Bars. She lost only one bar event in the city competition during the 1964-65 season and was the City of Dayton champ on the bars her senior year. The womens team finished second in the city her senior year. Della qualified for and participated in the State of Ohio meet. Joe Sullivan also used Della in several shows each year including Gymkhana at Memorial Hall and at UD basketball games.
Della served as Class President in her junior and senior year. Her junior year she was “Queen of Hearts” and on the Homecoming Court. Her senior year she was on the Homecoming Court and the Prom Court. In 1966 Della represented Stivers as a Dayton Relay Track Queen, and received the Dayton Police Award for outstanding citizenship.
Della and her five sisters, Marie Pummill Mills, Joy Pummill White, Sharon Olbers Rupert, Bobbie Olbers Voehringer, and Carol Olbers Wyatt all graduated from Stivers between 1947 and 1966.
She and her husband, Ken Wyatt, married in 1969. They work together in the insurance business for Nationwide. He is also a Hall of Fame recipient in that profession being one of only 51 agents in the USA with that award. Della has 3 step children, Tim Wyatt, Cindy Sorg, and Rick Wyatt, with 9 grandchildren, Kassidy, Garrett, Spencer, Dominic, Brad, Ben, Josh, Luke, & Gracie.
Della and Ken enjoy their grandchildren’s school sports, boating, water skiing, golf, and snow skiing.
