Harry Fenner followed his older brother, Lee, who had played on two Stivers city championship football teams in 1913 and 1914. Harry was an end, both offensively and defensively on the 1923 National Championship team. According to the Dayton Daily News, he played a great game receiving several passes to beat Maury High School of Norfolk, Virginia 10-0 for a national title. In addition, he also played a great game of defense which held this southern power house powerless.
Harry played guard on the 1923-1924 basketball team. He also was the team captain and leading scorer on this team that won the City and State Championship. In a critical game against Greenfield High School, Harry outscored the opposition with 14 points in a 36-13 win. According to the Dayton Daily News, “a great deal of the credit for Stivers victory will have to be given to Captain Fenner for he allowed only 2 goals through his position and in turn led his team in scoring by ringing up seven field goals”. Fenner was honored for his stellar play during the season by
making the All-Southwest and All Ohio Basketball Teams.
He attended the Ohio State University and then worked for Inland Manufacturing as a supervisor. Harry and wife, Kathy (Steele High School Graduate) had one daughter, Pat. Pat Fenner married UD Hall of Famer, Frank Siggins giving Harry two grandsons; Joe Siggins played basketball at UD while Frank Siggins, Jr. played football at Alter High School and Bowling Green University.
Harry loved Stivers and visited the school many times over the years while helping on several school projects. He often met with former Stivers teammates and was so proud to have been a Stivers Tiger.
